Self-Employed & 1099 Health Coverage

Self employed health insurance decisions usually start with a moment, not a question: a renewal that climbed, a job you left, a birthday that ended someone's coverage. If you are at one of those and paying the premium yourself, this page is for you.

Nobody hands you a benefits packet. That does not mean you have to work it out alone.

The moment, not the manual

People do not go looking for coverage content on a normal Tuesday. Something moves first. You left a job. A renewal climbed past what it was worth. A child turned 26. You are thinking about stepping back before 65 and realising the plan was attached to the work. That is when ten minutes is worth spending, and it is the only time this page is trying to reach anyone.

What is actually hard about doing this alone

Not finding options. There are plenty, and they are easy to find. The hard part is that the number used to compare them, the monthly premium, is the one that tells you least about how a plan behaves when it is used.

Two plans can sit within a few dollars of each other and treat a hospital stay completely differently.

That gap is not visible from a comparison grid, and it is the whole reason this is a conversation rather than a search.

What we will not do here

Tell you which plan to buy. We are not licensed to and would be guessing if we tried. What belongs on a page is the shape of the decision. What belongs in a conversation is your household, your state, and what you would actually use the coverage for.

Who we refer you to

Ryan Michalek at Michalek Health Solutions. NPN 21043091, NABIP member #525458. Both are public records, and both are worth looking up before you talk to anyone about coverage, this site included.

He will also say when the answer is to leave things alone, which is not the answer a site selling you something would give.

Build note: Structural draft, pending Esraa’s content QA and Mo’s compliance sign-off before this counts as publishable copy. See build brief B7.

Self-Employed & 1099 Health Coverage: questions

Is OwnBossHealth an insurance agency?

No. OwnBossHealth is an independent information and referral resource, not an agency or carrier. We connect you with a licensed insurance advisor, Michalek Health Solutions (NPN 21043091).

Who is this written for?

Self-employed, 1099 and small-business households without an employer plan, typically paying most or all of the premium themselves. If a subsidised marketplace plan still fits your household, that is usually the simpler route and healthcare.gov is the place to start.

What happens after I send the form?

Ryan Michalek, a licensed advisor, looks at your situation and tells you what you may qualify for. Sometimes the answer is that what you have is already right. There is no fee to you for the conversation.

Do I need to know what I want first?

No. Turning up with the question is enough. The hard part is reading what plans actually pay toward the things you would use them for, and that is the part he does.

What does it cost to talk to someone?

Nothing to you. OwnBossHealth does not charge for the referral, and the advisor is paid by the carrier rather than by you.
